Can the dog start wagging the tail?

The continued heating up of the UMPC market has shown a couple of things. The first being, that despite all the "opinions" to the contrary, an OEMed Linux install is a breeze to use and comes with a lot of productive software. The second, and probably most important thing it has shown is that MS can and will give in to price pressure and is not nearly as powerful as everyone thought.

Instead of retaliating against Asus, reducing "advertising incentives" and other perks at being a "Tier One" OEM, the net result that MS caved (because it has to) and offered it's XP Home for cut rate prices on the UMPC line. I am sure other OEMs were watching intensely on how it would pan out, and to their surprise, nothing happened. It then started a landslide of computer manufacturers diving into this market, all knowing they can offer Linux and not be penalized and get a cut rate price on XP.

This kind of revolt would have been unheard of 3-4 years ago and it showed a weakness in Microsoft's position. Simply put, MS needs, absolutely needs OEMs as a primary revenue stream and any threats or punishments implied by not toeing the line are empty. Let's be realistic here, MS is smart, they won't cut off their nose to spite their face and any one of the top 4 OEMs would not have to be all that worried about MS retaliation.

Now, as has been seen countless times, any time a corporation or government entity says anything along the lines of "ODF will be our format" or "OpenOffice to be deployed" or "Linux migration pending" can be guaranteed of instant and deep cuts to the price of a Microsoft solution. With margins so razor thin on the Windows side of the PC market (Apple commands and gets great margins), what is to prevent OEMs from putting the same kind of pressure on MS.

What do you think would happen if any of these headlines showed up today?

"Dell to pre-install Open Office across product line"
"Lenovo to offer Suse Linux Enterprise across product line"
"Acer in talks with IBM for pre-installed Symphony"

Well, here's the likely scenarios.

Dell would be offered $30 Office if pre-installed over Open Office
Lenovo would see it's effective price of Vista dropped to make SLED more expensive
Acer would be offered $30 Office if pre-installed over Symphony

See, there is a trend that is not that great for Microsoft, but very good for consumers in general happening right now. Despite massive campaigns stating otherwise from the entrenched MS ecosystem, Linux is a completely viable OS, with quality applications, that satisfies the vast majority of consumers (that try it). Cross platform Open Source Applications (VLC, OpenOffice, FireFox, Gimp...) compete quite well with their proprietary counterparts. Also, the internet is making the operating system not nearly as important as it used to be.

With these kinds of developments in the computing world, it is very very hard to command the kinds of margins you used to.

So the simple question is, for how much longer can the tail wag the dog? It won't be all that long until the dog realizes that hey "I can wag it myself".

Update: Well what do you know, my $30 guess for Office was bang on. Hey HP, you looking for a competitive advantage? For all the folks paying retail, or subsidizing these markets, when might you ask why not me?

Nice post and a good analogy. Yes, it seems Microsoft's influence is in retreat on all fronts. They are very rigid in their thinking. No matter what they say, they act as though the World is their sandbox and nobody plays in it without their permission. Unfortunately the World believed them for too long.

The fall of Microsoft is giving me great pleasure. The pronouncements from those who bow low in the direction of Redmond WA will provide me with endless hours of entertainment from the WayBack machine in the future.

Thanks for the feedback.

Honestly, I don't want to see Microsoft "fall" or become irrelevant, I just want a truly level playing field. Times are certainly changing, for the better for the consumer. I am working a blog where I predict that one tier one OEM will offer Linux as a choice, right beside Vista on at least 50% of their product line. When that happens, you will again see a flood from the rest.

Now, the fall from 800 lb Gorilla dictator to 200 lb competitor is very enjoyable to watch. :D

This is a good post, but one thing should be pointed out about the MS strategy; namely once a use gets used to a specific interface they do not way to move to another product. It is this lock-in that MS looks for in its strategy.

Keeping the pressure on price certainly helps OEMs whit their profit margins. There used to be a time that software represented 10% -20% of the cost of a machine. Today, just the basic software for a machine can be more that the cost of the hardware. This is the new reality that is really forcing the downward pressure on prices. Linux is still used for leverage (there is an alternative). I love Linux, but don't get too excited about the downfall of MS just yet.

I found this post through Linux.com's Newsvac and found it to be informative, a good post.

I have been predicting that Microsoft will be a vastly different company in the future. Two years ago I told my friends that in Ten years' time, Microsoft will be a vastly different company. It will never go away (too much money and inertia for that to happen), but will be forced to change the way that it operates. Your post shows us how that is all beginning.

Like you, I am not so much concerned with seeing Micorosoft "fall", but rather would like to see it reined in and compete on a level playing field.

Let's hope that this comes to pass sooner rather than later.

I used to be naive and think that only a level playing field will be needed. But the behavior of Microsoft employees and Microsoft Boosters has gone on so long that a clean slate is needed and they need to be wiped out of the market for good (pun intended). Reformat/reinstall mantra back at them.

Microsoft employees and Microsoft Boosters have been holding back computers, the net, the web and now even unrelated markets that simply use computers. So the sooner they are made irrelevant, the sooner we can get back to work.

What I do find fascinating isn't just the fact they caved and added additional support for Windows XP Home. It's that they then slapped on restrictions as to WHAT a 'netbook' actually is!

Erm. The Asus 701 running Xandros was flying off the shelves, it seems rather dense to slap restrictions on your product when the competitor really doesn't care.

RE: Xandros EEE versions. As has been reported, the Linux version is harder to find in stock while the XP versions are plentiful. Now certainly, some percentage are installing XP on the better hardware offered for the Linux version, but I would probably call it a niche (10% or so?). In brick and mortar, (Best Buy sells only the XP version), I asked why they don't carry both and the Linux enthusiast sales person pointed me to the Geek Squad sign. The "optimized and configured by Geek Squad" is a hard sell item there.

It will be interesting to see if the prediction of XP outselling Linux remains true. I mean, Asus, if you keep selling out of the Linux version, why keep refreshing the XP side harder?

Anyway, the Acer Aspire One is the one I will probably pick, but I need to look and touch an MSI Wind, and can't find any locally.

The Asus folks went to XP for two reasons:

1. By the time the hardware hit the streets the price had doubled. At $400 or more they were into the same price range as other XP laptops. Remember that ASUS sells a lot of hardware with Windows and needs to keep the best pricing. So they couldn't just stick with Linux once the economic case disappeared.

2. Microsoft cut the price of XP.

But if these pricecuts spread it will hurt Micorosoft almost as much as shipping penguins. Most of their revenue comes from OEM preloads. Cut that revenue in half without opening a new revenue stream and the shareholders will demand heads on sticks.

And sooner or later (and it looks like sooner) a generic Chinese outfit without a dependency on Microsoft's goodwill will hit that $200 pricepoint ASUS origo=ionally targeted and XP is too expensive for that segment even at $32. So then what do they do? Cut again?

Great article.

Unfortunately, many Windows users do not see why MS is cutting the price by so much, and still slam Linux so badly. They have Linux to thank for in getting Windows XP at such low price.

I would like to see more OEM manufacturers to continue to innovate on the OS front and put out more choices for users. Not everyone wants Windows on their mobile phones and on the same token not all users want Windows on their netbooks.

On another note:

By putting Windows on the netbooks, this will hurt many of the OEM, it will and in fact it is already eating into their normal laptop sales. The current genre of netbooks have evolved into a preculiar segment where many buyers are using them as a substituition of their primary computers. You can see many feedbacks yelling: I want 1280x768 screen, I want more than 160GB HDD, I want...

It deviates so much from the original Asus EeePC idea of a companion notebook-- something you do not use it full time but carry along with you for business, for school, for leisure. This fits nicely into a hole between a PDA/ Smart Phone and a full size laptop. It was supposed to be an appliance where you do not even care about what OS it is running, but basically fulfill your need of internet activities, and some basic document editing.

If the OEMs have sticked to this idea, it could probably complement their sales, and not eating into their higher margin laptop sales. Perhaps it works the same for MS, if they have ignored this segment entirely, the netbooks would probably not grown in an exponential pace, and be limited to a small niche market and will not eat into their Vista sales.
