Let's face it, if Windows was all of the following, Linux would have always remained a niche very minor player in the computing world.
1) Secure (the OS, without Anti-virus, Anti-Spyware, Anti-name_your_exploit_here
2) Reliable (Geek squad, "PC-Doctor software", BSODs common till XP, ...)
3) Non-Intrusive (Non DRM infected, Second Guess your intelligence, etc)
4) Inexpensive or reasonable return on investment
5) Customer Oriented (i.e. focused on customer needs instead of customer $s)
Either I would still be using Solaris, or, if all the above were true, I might actually have used or be using Windows. The fact is, for myself and probably many tens of millions of Linux desktop users worldwide, and certainly, on the server side where Linux has made phenomenal inroads, the above reasons are what drove/kept us away from Windows.
If the world Linux user base froze today, and not one more person or business deployed Linux, Linux would still be here to stay. There are so many high quality applications for the desktop and server today, and they will continue to get better and better regardless of whether the base grows.
On the other hand, is Linux really a threat to Windows. Well, I think that anyone who thinks that Linux hasn't won and now dominates all web servers simply hasn't moved beyond 2002. How many years ago was it when Microsoft and so many pundits announced that Linux was no threat to MS server sales on the web? Well, we now have the official Denial from Microsoft stating that Linux is no threat on the desktop.
This can only mean that Microsoft is very, very, very worried about Linux on the desktop. Now, the mass OEM market will and is the toughest market to crack, because, unlike on the server where the money is in the OS, and savings of tens to hundreds to millions of dollars is a direct result of NOT using Windows Server offerings. The reasons why the OEM market is harder to crack, you can see the reasons here
This does not mean it won't happen, and is indeed happening. You CAN find smaller OEMs offering Linspire, Xandros, etc, and the Windows monopoly position for desktops is being nibbled away from the edges.
But lets re-examine the initial list. Is Microsoft really trying to address all of these deficiencies and therefore, will they be able to head off the next person, and the next, from moving to Linux on the desktop or their server?
1) Security. I truly believe that Vista is a good start at attempting to secure the Operating System itself instead of relying on third party vendors. I don't believe that anyone, MS included, would state that using Vista without anti-virus and anti-spyware will be normal operating procedures. They would not want this, however, since there is too much money to be made securing their OS. Kinda ironic that deficiencies in their operating system create the market that they will now charge users to protect, but that is a completely new blog in itself.
Now, before the tired old argument comes out where "If Linux were more popular it would be attacked", read this. That dog won't hunt.
2) Reliable. Despite reading lots of angst, and hearing of many delays, I'll currently give MS the benefit of the doubt and assume that Vista will be as reliable as Linux.
3) Non Intrusive. In this respect, Microsoft is about as pro-linux as any company can be. Instead of making Windows less intrusive and less of an actual hastle to use, these and probably more to come/be discovered will ONLY help Linux adoption rates.
WGA Spyware Included
WGA is functioning flawlessly
Which version of Vista do you need?
Admin Pop Ups Done Right
More DRM control
This is the tip of the iceberg. Vista will come with many more controls over what you are allowed to use, and expect a continuing barrage of upgrade offers if you try to save some money and purchase a "cheaper" Vista. Several versions DO NOT even include a media player.
4) Inexpensive. In a world where 8-10% profit margins are considered good, have a look at Windows 77% profit margin, Office System profits of 71.8% here. With the coming confusion with 6 different cost points, MS is hoping that tens of millions of users will just get sick of a crippled version of Vista and download that "Cheap, $99.95 upgrade" (I have no idea what the price, but I am guessing it will be low enough that most just give in) to get an fully functional and feature capable desktop.
5) Customer Oriented. OK, look at 3 and 4 above and tell me with a straight face that the customer comes first. To be fair, Admin Pop Ups are part of security, and not part of the money making machine, and I hope they get it right, but it is still going to erode the "ease of use" advantage Windows has over Linux.
I think that Vista will do two things. It will make Microsoft a LOT of money in the short term and certainly drive Linux desktop adoption to the next level, especially outside the US.

I would go out on a limb and state that it's going to drive Linux adoption in the US as well. The reason why is that Microsoft has to convince consumers who just bought WindowsXp computers that now have to buy yet another computer and yet another Operating System. That's going to dis-enfranchise a ton of users who are going to start asking why they have to pay everytime Microsoft upgrades.
The change may not occur overnight, but right off hand Microsoft has a nightmare of a job promoting Vista against it's own products.
I would have to agree seeing how I have built 2 custom Linux only systems this week alone. I have also upgraded (that's what my customers call it, go figure.) more my fair share of M$ XP(whatever) machines over the past couple of years. I have been contracted to give F/OSS classes at a local PC store in my town. I have also been contacted by one of my suppliers who wants to have a sit down to hash out how he can add Linux to his software list. Here is a reality check for computer resellers if you do not partner with someone who can offer an alternative to M$ you may just get pulled down the tubes with them if that is the way Vista goes. The ironic thing is if Vista blows as bad as it does right now it was not Mac or Linux who took them down but themselves. Now that is a lesson we could all stand to learn from. ;)
Linux users need to get in touch with reality. Viruses, spyware, pop-ups etc. have not been that much of a problem since windows ME. I use XP at work and it is a reliable operating system that has maybe crashed twice on me in two years that I used it. With anti-virus and some common sense you are guaranteed a long strech of trouble free computing. And if you know what viruses and spyware are, than you probably know how to find free tools online to protect yourself.
Saying that viruses and pop-ups are plague on computing humanity and that we should all switch to linux or face doom, makes all of us linux users look like bunch of snake oil salesmen. Such BS will backfire and drive people away from linux.
There is only one reason to run linux: Promoting computing freedom. There is something to be said about sharing software with your neigbhoors, owning your own files, and not being locked in and controled by corporation. I bet that computing freedom is the reason why 99% of linux users use linux, and not to be free from pop-ups and viruses.
I will say that I switched to linux mostly because I wanted something new and interesting. Something to brag about. ( I was 15) But let me tell you why you are not completely right. I work for a computer repair company (NOT THE GEEK SQUAD... DAM THEM ALL) Anywho, I go out to 3+ peoples houses a day 5 days a week. Well, I get them all.. the dumb PC user and the not so dumb PC user. In the end they all can speak the word Spy-Ware, or Virus. But man they can't protect themselves. They don't know that AntiVir or AVG is free or were to get it. They don’t know about Spy-Bot or Ad-aware. I bet if they had to install it themselves they would, but they don't have the confidence to push the scary next button. Basically i am saying that even if you know what spy-ware is... that still doesn't mean that you can remove it. What if it skulked its little way into winint.dll in your lovely system32 and can't be removed even in 'safe mode'. Do they know that they can pop in there disk and copy the missing .dlls. Do they now how to use the not so great recovery console? Not to also state that EVERY!!!!!!!!! Computer I have gone to has had at least spy-ware on it. Some cases it is just a tracking cookie.. but man 80% of the time it is trashed. (Half of the time it is because someone was looking at porn.) Antivirus can't save you from that crap all the time. You say that isn't a problem any more!? I make my leaving off it friend. The ISP am using to send this message is being paid because I fix M$ insecurities.
I don't tell people to by my computers with linux on the because if they dont they will be doomed with viruses. I tell them they will have to pay another $90 bucks for XP Home OEM. That is all. Pluss my experience with the users I have put SuSE 9.2 9.3 and 10.0 have been that Linux is easier to use then windows! I have come back to some of them (two of them were my friends that were complete compute idiots.) They have done things like, installed Limewire and skype on there own, used a MP3 player, hooked up a lexmark printer, got the highest score and bet me on BZFlag (that poopyhead!), talked on Kopete(don't know how to spell it) All that jazz. Linux is getting easier, and easier. Windows is getting dumber and dumber.
I am a 1.5 year in Debian and i didn`t got a virus or trojan horse. The reason why I switched to Linux was that my Licensed OEM Micro$oft ($)Windozze XP Home run terrificulty slow on my old Acer notebook. Imagine that you must wait about 10-20 seconds every time while this piece of crap can switch to another application. They calling it "multitasking"...
After all I installed Debian on my Acer, recompiled a kernel and apt-geted my favorite app... I couldn`t imagine that my notebook will work so fast!
Now all my PC working under Debian and some applications runs in QEMU with windozze.
I agree with most of the points, might want to also add on TC ("Trusted Computing").
I'm going to be writing a similar article at http://jzencovich.blogspot.com/
look for it :)

What you say is only true for a small percentage of the overall Linux market, and an even smaller percentage of the overall computing marking.
However, you may it seem like Computing Freedom, and freedom from pop-ups and virus's are the only items worth talking about when converting systems. It isn't that simple.
The problem with your theory is that I can whole reject this argument of yours
Linux users need to get in touch with reality. Viruses, spyware, pop-ups etc. have not been that much of a problem since windows ME.
I would encourage you to actively look at the virus reports generated by ISCA Labs ( http://www.icsalabs.com/icsa/icsahome.php ), Symantec ( www.norton.com ), Mcaffee ( http://www.mcafee.com/us/ ), AVG ( http://www.grisoft.com ), Spybot Search and Destroy ( http://www.safer-networking.org ), LavaSoft Ad-Aware ( http://www.lavasoft.com ) ... and um..
why I am continuing? Because Virus's, Spyware, Pop-ups, and everything HAVE been major issues with WindowsXp. Have you forgetten these lovely virus's? Code Red (2001), SQL Slammer (2003), Blaster (2003),
Sobig.F (2003), Bagle (2004), MyDoom (2004), Sasser (2004) ??
Have you even bothered reading the updates that come through update.microsoft.com ??
And if you want to make the argument that having an anti-virus and or a spyware program protects you, I'm going to bust that as well.
How many of those virus's listed above could have been protected by writing good code to begin with?
ALL.
How many were protected against on 0-day by anti-virus programs?
NONE.
Having an Anti-Virus or an Anti-Spwyare program will NOT save you on 0-day attacks, period. End of story.
Once your theory is removed that all you need is a bit of "protection" to run Microsoft Windows and you'll be fine, the rest of your argument crumbles apart.
This is the guy who said that linux users need to get in touch with reality.
First of all, almost everyone I know uses windows. My close family buys a computer with windows pre-installed, and they use it without problems for years. They do email, see a few web-sites, play games, use office, etc. None of them has any problems with their computers. I do not remember last time I had to re-install windows for anyone, or do any major fixes.
With all due respect for tech support guy, once he gets a call to fix a computer, he is dealing with the worst of the worst cases.
And as for security announcements and news of the security holes and virus outbreaks: they are in the same category as terrorist atacks, AIDS and crime. I hear a lot about them on the news, but I do not personaly know anyone who had to deal with those. You cannot judge reality based on the news hadlines.
Viruses, pop-ups, spyware, etc are not that big of a deal for majority of users. Certanly they are not bothersome enough for people to switch operating systems. If you start talking to pepople about viruses and spyware, they will check your position against their own personal experience, and more likely than not, they will disagree with you. And more they disagree with you, more they defend Microsoft. I am convinced that many Microsoft zealots are created by linux and Mac zealots.
The only selling point for linux is the freedom. Remember the time when:
1. You could install a piece of software on more than one computer.
2. You could open your files in more than one program
3. You could share and compare applications with your friends.
4. When you always used latst and greatest version instead of cripple-ware (home edition, student edition, etc)
5. When you knew what everything in your machine was doing, and nothing was reported to any company by any product without your knowledge.
Back then I was clueless when I swapped those audio tapes and floppy disks with my friends (way before CDs). But slowly without us noticing, corporations have reduced our freedoms to a few allowed actions.
The things to come:
1. Hardware disabled because it does not protect "intelectual property"
2. Software that you will have to continuously pay for
3. Commercials which you will not be able to disable
4. Files that hold your data hostage.
Hey, you have a great blog here! I'm definitely going to bookmark you!
I have a wooden computer case site.
Come and check it out if you get time :-)
Greetings.
