OK, you have Linux on your computer. Maybe you had some trouble getting it installed and everything working (probably wifi if I had to guess, or a winmodem), but you are past all that, everything is working, and you are ready to start using the computer. Old habits die hard, so hopefully this list helps you get over them.
Of course, rules would not be rules if there were no exceptions to all of the following, but in general all these are the way it is.
1) Reboots are not SOP (Standard Operating Procedure). If an application dies, or locks up (which is rare, but can happen, usually with bleeding edge versions of apps), your OS is usually fine. If the app window stays open, iconify it or run xkill and click on it, no worries. The same is true for updates, software installs, etc. Except for kernel upgrades (infrequent), the message "You must reboot for changes to take affect" or what ever you are used to seeing is a thing of the past.
2) "It is recommended that you close all apps before proceeding" is a message you will fail to see. There is no reason to stop listening to online music, surfing the web, downloading updates or new programs and/or flipping back to your word processor, all while burning a music CD. The mouse tie ups common in other "multitasking" operating systems doesn't happen. You know the one where the icon becomes an hourglass and you are free to multi-task once the computer decides to give you cursor control back.
3) You don't need to renew your spyware/spamware and virus checker subscriptions. Sorry, you will have to find something else do with your money. Of course, nothing Linux can do about phishing links, so always beware there, but know that if you install it from your CD or open source vendor, you are spyware and virus free.
4) Linux comes with many, many, many, many applications to do pretty much anything you want to do with a computer. You won't find many Linux applications at the store because 1) they are included on your CDs/DVDs and 2) A free copy is just a download away. Always search your CD first. (with the software install method for the program you want) It is likely there, a few clicks and NO REBOOT away from running on your computer)
5) Stop looking for EULA boxes. You may have to occasionally agree to the GPL, however, email keys, digging out the CDs to find that security code to install xyz, email reminders about upgrades, all that joy doesn't exist, it is all yours to use in any way you desire.
6) Autoconfiguration. After you buy that USB drive, or that printer (you did verify that it is Linux compatible), plug it in then start using it. Your days of loading driver CD:reboot, load application CD:reboot, load OS CD x:reboot, register-click through 6 EULA boxes then finally get around to configuring it are over. You plug the USB drive in, 10 seconds later, it is fully installed and configured, and up opens your filemanager, or a printer dialogue box opens (select paper size, resolution, etc). The same thing you saw during your install, the usual lack of driver configuration is SOP in Linux.
7) You don't need to try to find the Linux equivalent of "PC Doctor" or whatever you are used to. Linux does not slow down over time, installing 40,000 apps (if you have the disk space) does not corrupt anything and feel free to uninstall any app through your distro's GUI interface, you WON'T clutter anything up.
8) Defrag. There is no Linux defrag tool, so don't look for it. In Linux, disks don't fragment in any substantial way. If you keep you HD at 98% all the time, then some fragmentation (obviously, about 2%) can occur since contiguous space is not available.
9) Under the "Start" menu, or Linux equivalent, you will find applications usually (sometimes your vendor makes strange placement choices) grouped in logical terms such as Internet (for of course, internet applications) or Office (for office applications) or Games. This is counter to the usual very logical way of Start-->Roxio-->Easy CD Creator 5-->Easy CD Creator--> Creator (You mean you forgot that Roxio makes the CD creation software for your lightscribe drive?
10) You computer is yours. No one is phoning home to check up on you. None of your music collection is about to be obsolete. None of your players require any internet connection to a "validation server" and none of your computer habits are being sent to any corporate entity that "believes strongly in your privacy" while it collects stats, no program is going to ask for revalidation if you decide to upgrade your motherboard, or video card, or add 3 USB hard drives. Your computer is yours, and you are free.
Part 2, Things a new Linux user should learn or would want to know.
Happy Trails
TripleII
P.S. Not a rule, but a perk, Clippy doesn't exist and there is no open source equivalent.
Corrected: See the comments, Clippy hase been emulated, pretty funny too!

«Oldest ‹Older 1 – 200 of 216 Newer› Newest»What the FSCK!? How come no one wants to talk about long uptimes that lead to corruption or creation of a useless lost and found?
nazamlaxela
Tad harsh dontcha think? I installed my laptop 2+ years ago, always on Mon-Friday, and it as 5 lost+found files. Would this be under the need for "PC Doctor" or "Disk Fragment? I tried googling around and could find very little about lost and found being a problem? I would think it would be pretty public since Linux servers have uptimes in the many months as the norm.
Nice article
Linux is not as good as you make it to appear but relative to Windos it is...
RL
Number 9: Great one! I never really think about that one, probably because I'm so used to dealing with the software, but I've had plenty of people ask me where something is, simply because the menu is set up like that. Of course, it's this way because using a corporate name is pretty much the only way each entity can avoid stepping on each other's toes, or having their toes stepped on. (I'd imagine that if someone uses your corporate name as a menu item, perhaps to displace your software, you can probably win a lawsuit. Which is something else Linux has above MS, a lot better/friendlier cooperation among it's developer base.)
No Clippy? I beg to differ.
Vance
Good stuff !
But them Winblows slaves like (enjoy) the pain of ease of use. So they are unlikely to be weaned from it.
Nice on with Clippy Link. I am going to install it and show my coworkers (fellow Unix/Linux users). Thanks.
You need to be careful with the not rebooting thing. You atleast need to restart your applications running some library that was updated or restart your desktop manager or X server if those were updated.
If its a security update, you are vulnerable until you kill and restart the program.
Great for servers will services in the background, but from a usability standpoint, starting an x server and rebooting are pretty similar.
There wasn't anything new and I was waiting little bit something else from this kind of eh, article?
But if these kind of stuff have to be reminded in some article I say linux community has failed, hence they should be doing more work to get it to normal people which doesn't even know where to turn on computer.
So this article could have been named "10 Things to boost linux (nothing new really)"
Be careful with
3) You don't need to renew your spyware/spamware and virus checker subscriptions. Sorry, you will have to find something else do with your money. Of course, nothing Linux can do about phishing links, so always beware there, but know that if you install it from your CD or open source vendor, you are spyware and virus free.
Although so far it has only been proof of concept (although there are a few reported case's of linux viruses), you do need to have something like clamAV running. Even though linux is secure, you still have a human using it.
AJ
The article was not what I expected. There are things that a Windows user moving to Linux needs to unlearn, and things that need to be learned in their place. This article seemed more an attack on Windows and was not productive.
Thanks for clarifying point #2 for me. Fortunately I have not had that much experience in MS Windows, and I had always wondered about the very curious instructions to close alll other apps before proceeding. I found that a real head scratcher.
But I am not sure what you meant about mouse tie-ups in "other operating systems." Does any OS besides MS Windows have this problem?
All great, apart from No. 6. Wtf? Hardware configuration is NOT that easy under Linux
All great points. Some people just don't get it though :
- No need to reboot is a great thing. And NO, from a usability standpoint, restarting an X Server and rebooting are not at all similar. For example, if you have P2P running, rebooting will break your connexion, but just restarting the X server, you will find your connection in the same state you left it. There are lots of example like that.
- There is no need for antivirus software either. ClamAV is good to protect Windows users mail, but is no use for Linux. A user that can set it up won't need it, and a user that can't won't need it either. I have let loose all my users on their mail for 3+ years, and they never got any virus on Linux.
- Finally, if you have used Linux and bought recent hardware, you know how MUCH easy it is to configure hardware : it's automatic. When you buy new "plug-and-play" hardware designed for WinXP, most of the time, they come with red tape all over them, with big red letters telling you to install and configure the software first. So much for plug and play. On Linux, you just remove all the red tapes and plug and it works. I've seen this for USB scanner, printer, wifi card.
You may have to occasionally agree to the GPL
That's not true. Oh, sure, some programmers/vendors make the mistake of saying "you must agree to the GPL prior to installation/use" but they are mistaken.
The GPL is not a user license agreement. It is a copyright license, allowing you the right to redistribute software and/or to make derivative works.
To AC who says this is "nothing new".
Read the damn title. It says for people "new to Linux". Duh.
No there is no "clippy". Vigor is clippy's step-brother :P
They are similar, but different fathers ;) lol
As reguards mouse tie ups, I don't use Mac too often, but I know that Macs (OSX and previous) have their INCREDIBLY LONG mouse ties ups at times.
Overall great article. I looked for a trackback link, but couldn't find it. I posted this article under my blog here. Check it out.

@nazamlaxela
I guess nobody is talking about it because it's a complete fantasy. Look up journaled filesystems and so on. You can even make ext3 commit everything (to disk) on a configurable interval.

Long uptimes and reboot SOP: wrong. that only applied to w98 and earlier. This no longer applies in the xp day and age. I have left my XP machine up for weeks on end as have millions of other ppl.
Easy hardware config, wrong. eg. "oh linux supports your controler" ... "oh you want to do what with it?" ... "sorry the linux driver written by bob over there dosent support that" ... "yes it works in xp but this is linux ... its better btw"
"It is recommended that you close all apps before proceeding": wrong. eg. "Oh you want to use this driver so that you can use ubiquitous hardware X from vendor Y? oh well you need to add this driver written by bobs brother (because Y dosent support linux) into the kernal file and recompile the kernal" ... "yeah you gotta reboot" .. "whats a kernal file? read the manual! WTFNOOB HAHAH U SUPID WIDOWZ USER " ...
"Autoconfiguration" wrong. By your very words: "you did verify that it is Linux compatible". Everything has a windows drive. NOT EVERYTHING HAS A LINUX ONE. If ther *is* one ... it *might* work ... and it *might* support all the features of said hardware.
Another one you missed: "Application install is easy on XP". Yup as a linux user you will have to unlearn this. Try installing program X ... only to find it needs package Y and Z, so you go get Y and Z and install Y ... but Y needs Z to be installed first ... so you go install Z ... oh wait Z needs Y installed first .. oh no! wtf the world imploded! Circular package requirements are thE DUMBEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN. And yes, i have tried package installers ... the above example is my experience trying to install on of the "best" package installers for redhat.
I could go on but you linux evangelots need to understand that it isent 1990 anymore. Shesh!
To quote a previous comment:
"Linux is not as good as you make it to appear but relative to Windos it is..."
Just how good does it need to be? Linux is the best OS I've ever used. Who's developing something better? What does better look like?
Actually...
I just installed Ubuntu (dapper) and was surprised that it told me that it needed to reboot.
Of course it was after a kernel update, but still.
Wow sounds like you haven't used windows since 1996. Half of this list is outdated.
1) Windows XP is almost as good about not rebooting as Linux, the only time you really need to reboot is when you've installed something that has changed certain system files.
2) I haven't had to so much as stop transcoding a dvd while burning another, this was a result of the buffer size on CD-Rs in the past, haven't see this issue since 4x burners that had less than 1mb buffer.
3) true, but a little due dilligence (hardware firewall, firefox/opera, avast/avg, common sense) and it's almost non-issue.
4) Maybe for simple power users but what about engineers? I have yet to see a linux app that holds a candle to any of the popular CAD programs in windows. Same goes with GIS software. Yea my mom could get by on ubuntu, but I couldn't.
5) You can run windows and still have the vast majority of your software GPL. I use Firefox, OOo, inkscape, gimp, cygwin, gaim. Of course I also have the luxury of many beerware and commercial apps that linux does not have access too, which enriches my options, EULA or not.
6) Uhh, Autoconfiguration is not exclusive to Linux either. This has been available on USB devices since Windows 98.
7) Won't clutter anything up? My /etc folder is nothing but before I even install 1 app.
8) Fragmentation isn't that huge of an issue on ntfs, it's still there but it doesn't affect performance nearly as much as FAT/FAT32.
9) I guess this depends on preference and very few applications are more than 2 menu's deep. You're being overly melodramatic here.
10) This is a choice the user makes that is not dependant on the OS. My OS does not phone home, neither does any of my software, that I do not explicitly allow.
I just recently loaded Linux (Ubuntu) on one of my system a home, but have been using Unix at work for years. I have seen plenty of time (in Unix) where disks become currupt or space on one of hte slices gets filled up. FSCK is a must know on Unix, also df -k so you know what slice is filling up and where to go to look for files that need to be moved or removed. No system is as infalable as you make Linux out to be. We need to educate M$ users no attack / give false hope to them. Windows is to operating system, what AOL was to internet connections, ie a great place to learn, but not a "place to stay".
Get used to free, crappier software. Seriously, GIMP is free, but does it matter? It stinks compared to Photoshop. Sorry everybody, it's the truth. I'm a photo pro, and GIMP simply stinks.
Second comment on this subject, this one for the Windows users lurking here. I guess by supporting M$ you don't mind letting them know everything on your system (authentication my foot). and I guess you like a big corperation TELLING you what hardware you have in your sytem in order to use their newest operating system (see all information on Vista). Most people out there will not be able to afford to go out and upgrade/buy a new computer just to get Vista to work. I am switching to Linux, because I am tired of M$ "peeking"into my computer (no bodies business but mine), and tired of them "telling"me what I need and can/can't have on my system. M$ needs to be taken down a few notches and remember humble beginnings. They need to remember that if it wasn't for a VERY generous corperation (IBM) they wouldn't even exsist today!!
One major thing Windows has over Linux is standard installation packages (.exe or .msi). There are too many ways to install software on Linux. A lot of Linux freeware is a tarball of sources which require you to have a compiler and do a make. I think the difficulty in installing freeware/shareware is what keeps most users away from Linux.
Beside the thing with the Fragmantation, there's nothing in this list that wouldn't also be true for WinXP - at least if you are a "advanced user".
Just because you have the application downloaded, doesn't mean you can run it. First you have to make sure your download is for the right distro, because RH apps don't install to Debian, then you have to make sure you have all the requirements and dependencies fulfilled, because not all libraries are installed, and finally, if you decide to try to make installations easier by using something like Yum, make sure you only use certain repositories, because if you mix Dag with Base, your OS is now somehow “contaminated” and everything you try to install later will fail because of messed up dependencies and the failure of the Yum community to agree upon any versioning schema.
And I won’t even begin to talk about “configure – make – make install.” You’ll have to “unlearn” how nice it was to just double-click a setup.exe for your installation to begin.
Yes Windows users must install an anti-virus product; so will you someday when the market share is worthy of such.
Yes, they have the possibility of spyware, and thus must run anti-spyware – but today's systems are more than capable of giving up the few cycles required for such. Besides, your version of Java is just is buggy as theirs, so it’s only a matter of time for you too. that's not implying Java is the source of all that is spyware, I know ActiveX is responsible.
Sincerely,
"Just a guy struggling to find a good OS."
Mac seems to suffice for me right now, as it provides the stability of the *NIX kernel with an even more stable front-end than Gnome or KDE - but once again, now I have to buy all my apps.
'Another one you missed: "Application install is easy on XP". And yes, i have tried package installers ... the above example is my experience trying to install on of the "best" package installers for redhat.'
So... you want many copies of the same library being run by several programs at the same time using extra system resources for no good reason at all? There's something to be said for all-inclusive installations, but if you can run all of your programs from one master set of libraries then why would you bother doing it any other way? It means your programs run faster and easier with (in most cases) only a tiny bit more effort.
Besides, have you used the newer package managing systems? They auto-resolve dependancies and download them with the program you are getting. That is not more difficult, and since you aren't downloading multiple copies of libraries every time you install something it means less download time as well.
Something like Gentoo's emerge for example will auto-resolve dependancies download the source code for all of the libraries you need with the program (slightly slower installation, but faster more stable program in the end) then compile it and create an entry into the system to allow you to update or remove it with one command.
I think your argument in this case is outdated, only a few distros still make the user grab their own dependancies if they don't want to.
You do have to reboot after kernel upgrade.
Well, HAVE is too strong. It asks you. And I guess it probobly means it. But it aint gonna close all your important work without saving it like Windows does occasionally.
I aggree, you don't have to reboot a Windows XP pc so much anymore as in the good ol' days. But secure people would try to have their pc up to date with the latest patches. In Windows XP Pro (i can't speak for the other) you sometimes get a nagging screen that it will reboot in 4 minutes. You can press "Reboot later" but then it'll just pop up again in about 10 minutes. So eventually, one ends up rebooting anyway.
Looks like a bunch of Linux user sour grapes to me.
No point in dragging up this whole argument. Windows won the war, get over it.
Drone on for years about Linux, but until you can get people with little computer experience to use it from the box, no messing, no config, it will lose.
Shoot away Linux fans, live in your happy fluffy pink world, it nice in there.
The rest of use will get on with working on our OSX and Win boxes, coz they do the job.
Laters
I've never had Windows ask me to close ALL applications before installing or upgrading a program. I have had it say, "Please clone all instances of program X before proceeding." As in if you're updating your Firefox, before it can continue properly you must close firefox, so that it can replace the files. If you didn't do this it would cause the system to become unstable as it replaced the files right out form under it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a huge fan of Windows. I consider myself a multi-OS user as I use Mac OSX, Linux (Gentoo) and Windows XP everyday. They all have their advantages and problems. I just think that non-Windows users tend to blow some of these issues out of proportion. I see it both from Linux and Mac enthusiests.
Overall, this article was not useful at all. It is trite and really fails to address some of the real issues a new Linux user will face. Like, "Why is it asking me for my root password when I do this?" or "where are my programs located? no not the icons in Gnome/KDE, but the files themselves?" Or my favorite, "how do I uninstall program X that did not come with my distro?" These are really the things that distinguish the operating systems.
Hi All, just wanted to follow up. This list, every item on it, are compiliations of common questions seen over and over again at JustLinux (I am hlrguy there but that handle wasn't available here). Especially Reboot, Defrag, where are the apps installed and where is a Linux AV program. At least 10 times I have directly posted about lack of frgmentation.
On HW plug and play. Since install. USB-DVD, WirelessRouter (with WiFi on this laptop), 2 Thumbdrives, New DX6490, new printer and new scanner. Not once, did I have to do anything to get any of them to work, I just plugged them in, and for example, started K3B and I had a DVD-RW drive that just worked. Of course, I did my homework and verified all before I bought.
John Z, going to turn traceback links on, didn't know what that option was.
I love Gimp, but I believe in your right to hate it. :-D
TripleII
Oddly, reading number 6 sounds more like you're talking about XP than linux. New devices automagically work, you don't need to go on some mad quest for drivers?
Maybe Gentoo's made me too cynical when it comes to user friendly, but man, what distro are YOU running?
What Linux-utopia planet is HE from? I have installed dozens of linux distros on lots of platforms. (And tons of XP, 2000, 2003, 95,98, win 3.1, win 386, windows 2, DOS, CPM). I've been in 'dependency hell'. I've seen the 'simple' install instructions (simply unzip with gzip, then untar with tar -uxvf, then run configure && make and then spend the next six friggin hours trying to figure out that you need to create a symbolic link since the stupid $%$ script can't find the library /dev/bpf, and the brain-damaged configure checks for /dev/bpf0).
Give me a MSI, please!! RPMs are great, so is YUM, but LINUX is no dreamland utopia world. When I plug my Epson 820 into my DLink print server and let XP do it's thing, I can make it work in about ten minutes, including downloading the drivers from epson. Wellll, Dlink doesn't exactly support Linux, and after spending about an hour figuring out CUPS, lpd, and having to use nmap and ethereal to figure out the friggin ports dlink uses, so finally I just plug the SusE box right into the printer and load the drivers. Now when I go to print, the print jobs just (poof) disappear. The article never told me things to unlearn: like stop typing 'dir' and stop looking to change to the a: drive or D: drive for the floppy/CD. And learn to make unix slashes / and not microsoft slashes \.
Application installation IS a mental barrier for a linux newbie.
For me as a Debian user it was really hard to STOP googling for programs and just start using "synaptic" and "apt-cache search" for all my software needs. 99% of the apps were already packaged by Debian people, the only ones that weren't were some rare cases that just nobody was using so it never got packaged. Some of those were even available at repositories listed in apt-get.org, but still ... it's hard to shift from a google-download-run-click_too_many_times-reboot-try mentality to apt-cache,apt-get install, read docs, run.
Freaky how more compicated (braindead) method seems easier for most people.
As a Windows XP desktop user running a multiprocessor machine, I can't remember when the last time my machine crashed when an app bombed out.
My desktop machine has been up for 9 months now. I dont update antispyware and antivirus software because I don't install spyware or viruses. Multitasking works fine. Installing printers never requires a reboot, the driver installs and just works.
I'm not quite sure what the point of your rant is, none of the points you raised make Linux sound any more attractive than what I'm currently running: Windows XP SP2 and Solaris 10.
Will add this to profile. SLP 9.2 on Dell Lattitude Notebook. The hw detection and autoconfiguration has always amazed me. Also, kernel compiles? 7 years using Linux, I have never recompiled a kernel, so why is this always brought up as one of Linux's achillies heel?
1) Reboots are not SOP (Standard Operating Procedure).
It really isnt this way on windows these days BUT programs always ask you to reboot anyway even though 90% of the time you dont need to.
2) "It is recommended that you close all apps before proceeding"
Same answer as above.
If linux gains a larger market share of "normal" desktop users much of the other problems will reproduce themselves there, viruses will get written, spyware will be ran, commercial software will become more common.
So best not to unlearn everything you have learnt just yet.
Why can't we just all get along! Linux, Microsoft Os, BSD, Osx!!???!?!?!! They all have there places. Linux is great for hardcore users, Microsoft is good for gaming and your general use population, BSD is great for servers, and Osx is great for ... well... alot...
Aren't you forgetting something ?
The big difference between Linux and Windows isn't of the programs they run, the speed, the compatibility etc etc.
It is this - Linux is FREE :)
Try competing with that, and don't try that stuff with windows programs are better, because for the money you're giving for them, they better be !

Unfortunately, some sick individual made a version of Clippy for Linux...
http://vigor.sourceforge.net/
Unfortunately, some sick individual made a version of Clippy for Linux...
You forgot
11) Forget about copy and paste. In the Linux world, it's inconsistent and flaky, so start remembering stuff so you can type it out again later!
4) Maybe for simple power users but what about engineers? I have yet to see a linux app that holds a candle to any of the popular CAD programs in windows. Same goes with GIS software. Yea my mom could get by on ubuntu, but I couldn't.
I know you're the same weener who wrote the same feedback in another article. (I think it was about Japanese engineers.)
I am an engineer and I use Linux.
You call yourself an engineer and yet, you have never heard of Pro/ENGINEER or UGS's NX?
I also use Linux with Ansys (FEA) and Fluent (CFD).
Gees, I am ashamed to be in a field that's related to yours.
I use Linux for both home and at work. Unlike most weeners who call themselves engineers, I'm fortunate enough to work in a place where the person in charge doesn't blindly accept Microsoft's nonsense, and sign deals with them.
Have you ever had them visit you?
No?
Well, if they hear you use anything open-source, their reps will lie and bribe your bosses into using MS solutions. (We're talking about literally giving Server versions of Windows away, just so you sign up with them!)...My boss told them kindly, to get lost.
Its sad, an engineer that prefers Windows...One wonders what kind of engineer you really are to begin with.
Copy and paste, that gives me an idea for new article, my tope 10 hints. Have you tried copy/past without keyboard shortcuts? Highlight any text, even full HTML page with your mouse, move to compose email or abiword or office, click left-right buttons simultaneous. Linux has a built in clipboard. Any highlighted text can be pasted with left-right simultaneous clicks. I copy from Firefox to OpenOffice, from command line to Gaim, I don't know of any application I can't cut/paste from without using keyboard shortcut. I never tried with shortcuts, and can't live without the automatic clipboard.
The thing about Windows users...They're curious about Linux, but they will find EVERY possible excuse not to try it.
The worst ones are the "experienced" ones who think they're some sort of computer experts. The ones that think, "if it doesn't work for me, it's not gonna work for anyone else."
The only legit reasons to even bother with Windows anymore, is:
(1) If you're a hardcore gamer. We all know these are clueless folks who will often blow heaps of money on hardware, because the game devs put them in a position to. ie: You can't play the latest games without modern hardware! (software drives hardware sales).
(2) Have to use a Windows-specific applications. Even then, one should at least explore WINE or even virtualisation and determine if its possible to run those apps smoothly. It is perfectly fine to run the free WMware Server and run Windows in a virtual machine. This way, if Windows chucks a spaz, you can roll back to the previously saved image or shutdown without needing to reset the WHOLE system. I've been doing this for months, because some customers still use MS Word.
(3) Your boss is clueless about technology, and blindly accepts Microsoft propaganda without a thought in the world.
I know there is now a generation of people who have grown up on Windows. Its hard for them to move as they get older. (Because most often, people find it harder to leave and try something new). They get impatient and demand results with minimal effort...Its sad but true.
Microsoft's plan to fill educational institutions and schools with their garbage has succeeded.
Its a nasty business tactic that can be summarised in a sentence.
=> Get them while they're young, and you have them for life.
How do you think MS makes their Billions every year?
I don't know why everyone says this list is useless or wrong; I wish I had this around when I was new to Linux (Having used windows exclusively). This is almost exactly what I had to relearn when I started using Linux. I don't know how many times I tried rebooting to solve simple problems. I looked for the defrag utility, and discovered the issue with #4: it's not the fact that apps are available, but just the opposite. There's so many, how in the world does a newbie know what he's looking for? It took me a week to figure out that k3b was what I want to use for CD Burning, and another few days to find amarok for music.
#6 is certainly a lifesaver. I once spent 6 hours just installing a driver on windows XP for my rare HP printer, and another 4 hours setting up my scanner properly. Add to that the 3 hours it took to get that stupid proprietary connection with the Kodak digital camera set up, and it's starting to look like windows is a waste of time. And that's without any problems! For the record, I plugged that printer into my mandrake system (3 years ago) and 3 seconds later it asked me to insert the Mandrake install CD. I did, and 30 seconds later the printer was working. I then kicked myself for putting it off because I thought it would be hard. Same for the Camera: I plugged it into my new Ubuntu system and 45 seconds later all the pics were on my hard drive.
On the other hand, I tried out my very obsolete (as in the manufacturer no longer admits they made it) webcam on both windows xp and ubuntu. On windows, I plugged it in, then spend 3 hours on the web trying to find an app that would let me actually do something with the video feed (windows built in "camera" tools are junk). It worked fine. On Ubuntu, I plugged it in, waited a few seconds in case it would autodetect it, then tried to install a driver for it. The very second any app tried to access the device, the machine would instantly reboot. As in the worst crash I've ever seen on a linux system. Go figure.
So yes, all of the points you make are valid, and you do mention that there are exceptions. The only problem is that those exceptions are rather big problems when you run into them.
There will never be the virus problem on Linux that exists on Windows because it is based on a single-user model. In Windows anyone can overwrite files or execute code from any location and that is the basic insecurity that allows virus and malware propagation whereas Linux will not allow writes outside the user's home directory without entering the root password. You are smoking crack if you think Windows XP is even remotely as secure as Linux or any *nix for that matter.
I think this is a great summary, and a useful one. As a Linux "newb" I have come to enjoy the benefits of freedom that Linux represents. It ain't all THAT hard to learn either. Another thing that isn't hard to learn is how to spot the FUD comments. Somewhere in them they always say something like "Don't get me wrong, I dislike MS as much as the next guy, BUT..." or "Don't get me wrong, I use Linux and like it, BUT..." and then they proceed to explain how it's just not QUITE ready for poor dumb Aunt Tillie, or Joe User Loser 'cuz it's just too hard to understand.
Well, Aunt Tillie's here to tell ya, many of the newer Linux distros truly ain't that hard to learn. Ubuntu is amazing.
When even little old ladies can spot the FUD, it's time to find a new approach.
Don't get me wrong, I like Windows as much as the next old lady, BUT...it's too insecure and the licensing is just too restrictive and intrusive to make a good desktop for poor dumb Aunt Tillie and Joe User...Maybe Windows will be ready for the desktop in another five years. Heh heh...
:)

Sorry, but this article is hogwash.
Except for kernel upgrades (infrequent), the message "You must reboot for changes to take affect" or what ever you are used to seeing is a thing of the past.
Incorrect. The 2.6.16 kernel was upgraded 20 times in two months, all minor buxfixes. Hardly infrequent, I would say.
The mouse tie ups common in other "multitasking" operating systems doesn't happen. You know the one where the icon becomes an hourglass and you are free to multi-task once the computer decides to give you cursor control back.
Incorrect. Application snafus tie up my box as often as they ever did on Windows. OpenOffice and Acrobat Reader both take control of my mouse.
You don't need to renew your spyware/spamware and virus checker subscriptions. Sorry, you will have to find something else do with your money
Incorrect. I have oodles of logs showing attempted virus attacks. The avenues of attack are different, however, they still exist. That false sense of security is as bad as no security, and in the hands of an inexperienced user, will lead to an infection rather quickly. I also have a massive collection of recent Linux and BSD viruses. And wtf is spamware?
Linux comes with many, many, many, many applications to do pretty much anything you want to do with a computer. You won't find many Linux applications at the store because 1) they are included on your CDs/DVDs and 2) A free copy is just a download away. Always search your CD first.
Incorrect. Your DISTRIBUTION comes with many free apps. Linux is merely the kernel. But that's arguing over semantics. I assure you, however, that my copy of VMWare is NOT free, nor are man commercial firewall applications running on a Linux platform. Even the gas pumps around here run an embedded Linux, which again, is NOT free; the kernel, maybe, but not the software that runs the pumps.
Stop looking for EULA boxes. You may have to occasionally agree to the GPL, however, email keys, digging out the CDs to find that security code to install xyz, email reminders about upgrades, all that joy doesn't exist, it is all yours to use in any way you desire.
Incorrect. There are a multitude of license, even free ones, under which Linux based software is released, the mist common being the GPL, the LGPL, the BSD license, and 4 different kinds of Creative Commons licenses. Assuming that all software is released under the same license is incredibly stupid, and, in a corporate setting, will quickly lead to a lawsuit. If anybody has Acrobat Reader installed, check the license. It is none of the above. OpenOffice is LGPL licensed. So don't try to take code from it and incorporate it into your own. You will be sued rather quickly.
Autoconfiguration. You plug the USB drive in, 10 seconds later, it is fully installed and configured, and up opens your filemanager, or a printer dialogue box opens (select paper size, resolution, etc
Incorrect. This is only true when you are using older hardware. Any hardware manufacturer who has not released specifications for their hardware will leave you in the dark. ATI is a prime example (although they have been improving lately). Every time you buy a printer, you will need to check the compatibility list. Digital cameras, scanners, cellphones, webcams, and the like also all suffer the same problems. I personally spent hours getting USB flash support working.
You don't need to try to find the Linux equivalent of "PC Doctor" or whatever you are used to. Linux does not slow down over time, installing 40,000 apps (if you have the disk space) does not corrupt anything and feel free to uninstall any app through your distro's GUI interface, you WON'T clutter anything up.
Incorrect. This is sheer lunacy. Anyone who believes that should be summarily executed. First of all, of those 40,000 apps, I would bet that at least 400 will run some sort of background process, eating CPU time. Furthermore, every application you add will increase the size of the superblock, and its associated subblocks, thereby increasing search time. It will also increase the physical space between data on the disk, thereby increasing head movements, and by extension, access times. Not everything has a convenient GUI uninstaller either, nor do all of them even work properly. Linux base operating systems are as susceptible as any Windows based operating system to slowing down over time. The only deciding factor is the experience of the administrator.
Defrag. There is no Linux defrag tool, so don't look for it. In Linux, disks don't fragment in any substantial way. If you keep you HD at 98% all the time, then some fragmentation (obviously, about 2%) can occur since contiguous space is not available.
Incorrect. There are indeed Linux based defrag tools, however, Linux based filesystems were ahead of the game in terms of on-the-fly defragmentation. The are far from perfect, though, and *do* need defragmentation occasionally. And in any case, newer NTFS filesystems perform just as well. It is not Linux that determines the need for a defragmentation tool. It is the underlying filesystem, commonly either ext2, ext3, ReiserFS, or Reiser4, although many other filesystems exist. This clearly demonstrates a lack of understanding of both. [edit]My ReiserFS filesystem, one of the best in terms of fragmentation, is averaging between 5% and 7% fragmentation, depending on the partition, with 33% average HD usage. By these calculations (98% use = 2% fragmentation), my 33% full HD should be 66% fragmented! Sheesh, lack of experience, anyone?[/edit]
Under the "Start" menu, or Linux equivalent, you will find applications usually (sometimes your vendor makes strange placement choices) grouped in logical terms such as Internet (for of course, internet applications) or Office (for office applications) or Games. This is counter to the usual very logical way of Start-->Roxio-->Easy CD Creator 5-->Easy CD Creator--> Creator
Incorrect. My Windows start menu is extremely well organized, but that is because I seem to have the motivation to organize it. Disorganized start menus are merely a signal that the user is too lazy to organize them. Not all Linux based applications install themselves into the menu system either, quite often requiring you to do so personally, which is really no more difficult than doing it on a Windows system, and no easier, either.
You computer is yours. No one is phoning home to check up on you. None of your music collection is about to be obsolete. None of your players require any internet connection to a "validation server" and none of your computer habits are being sent to any corporate entity that "believes strongly in your privacy" while it collects stats
Incorrect. Acrobat Reader quite clearly gathers information on the files I am viewing. I have logs proving that. VMWare also dials home to check for upgrades at every start -- rather annoying, I think. Many Linux based applications do indeed require the approval of a validation server.
Hrm... seems to me this is both biased and uninformed. Very misleading to new users who will hope be rid of all this, yet find the same problems in another form. It is precisely this kind of vigilantism that makes Linux zealots look so pathetic - they can't see the forest for the trees.
90% of being smart is knowing what you're dumb at. This guy obviously doesn't know what he's dumb at. Ugh, I hate articles like that that give the Internet a bad name as a place to find good information. It's because of people like this.
Boy, I wonder how long it will take to have this deleted...
This is just a troll post hiding behind a useful-sounding title.
Well, Linux is not bad, but then, why so much Windows all over the world?, why it is still the preferred OS?, isn't Linux so much better? Think a little... Now, and i bet you ten years later, and i bet you much, much more time later, Windows will still be there at the top. Why? because it is not so bad. Being "different" may sound romantic, but serious Business is not so romantic.
The copy and paste comments are a candidate for # 11: X has two (count 'em, 2) different copy-and-paste buffers. This causes considerable confusion among the unwary and might lead them to think that the mechanism is broken. Basically, there is the clipboard and the "primary selection".
The clipboard is used by edit menu copy & paste, and the Ctrl-C/Ctrl-V keys.
The primary selection is used by the "left button mouse swipe, middle button to paste" mechanism.
For a better description than there is room here, see X Selections, Cut Buffers, and Kill Rings.
"Well, Linux is not bad, but then, why so much Windows all over the world?, why it is still the preferred OS?"
Well, thats simple. Windows is not the preferred os, it's the os people are coerced to use because it is preinstalled on virtually every pc bought. This is not because users want it, it is because of the strong arm bully boy tactics of Ms marketing. Even the 5% ish of bare bones kits have now attracted the attention of the windows licence enforcers who claim that the bare bones systems will inevitably end up running a ripped off copy of windows.
Set up a linux system for a friend or relative who just wants to "use" a computer and they'll get on just fine after some basic training. The hardest converts are those who think they understand how windows works and want to tinker.
As for viruses on linux, nobody has mentioned the "x" bit in file permissions. If I intentially download a file, I have to make it chmod +x to be able to run it. As far as I am aware, there is no automatic way a mischeviously downloaded app can become runable without some intervention.
Insecure/ buggy daemons etc are another thing, using a firewall on an internet connection is just good practice whatever the os.
Andrew Stringer
I still dual boot FC5 and windows xp.
Xp isn't that bad..
I'm an embedded linux programmer primarily and a windows services/database programmer secondly.
Linux is not user friendly. Get over it. Open office is no microsoft office, the gimp is definately no photoshop or paintshop pro, and eclipse, kate, emacs, and vi all suck bigtime compared to Visual Studio.
Linux hardware support is ok if you keep your kernel up to date or use older hardware.
As for stability, I find linux to be very stable. But my desktop apps in linux still crash occasionally. No it doesn't bring down the whole OS, but they don't in windows either.
Microsoft has some great products, and I certainly feel that for $100 or less windows xp is a great product for the home/desktop. Windows xp is completely unsuitable for my embedded products at work, however.
as long as yum or apt or ipkg has the package you need, I would have to agree with other linux folk that installing software on linux is actually EASIER than windows and makes much more sense. It is also definately easier to keep your software up to date this way. Installing stuff yourself with configure - make - make install is a crap shoot. I can't tell you how many times that fails the first time. Hard to resolve? not normally, but that's not the point now is it?
I have several servers running windows server 2003 that are rock solid. I have many linux servers running rock solid as well. Only problems I ever have with any of them are power failures or a hardware failure like a hard disk dieing.
You know you are on to something when everything you write is attempted to be discredited. A couple of rebuttals (I'm not going to try redrag through a point by point, I made my points in the article).
a) Show me these defrag tools? Yes, technically, you are right, the filesystem is defragging automatically, that means the user doesn't have to. Also, I said Linux FS don't defrag any appreciable amount.
b) I am under constant virus attack too, by infected Windows machines trying to infect other Windows machines. What does that have to do with Linux Viruses. Link to one, just ONE Linux virus that propagated in the wild?
c) 2+ years and played with, installed, uninstalled and upgraded a TON of software and the computer is as fast as the day I installed it and
Thanks, in some cases, for showing the exceptions that prove the rule.
You might want to check my open letter article, I know you have to check if it will work with Linux first before you buy it. I'd like to change this and get it off the list of points against Linux.
"Linux is not user friendly. Get over it. Open office is no microsoft office, the gimp is definately no photoshop or paintshop pro, and eclipse, kate, emacs, and vi all suck bigtime compared to Visual Studio."
Sorry to nitpick, but I don't really agree with this. It's all in the perspective of the user. I have done webcoding freelance before and for slicing I would prefer to use GIMP over Photoshop any day, it's just simpler and uses much less of my PC to do this simple task. True it doesn't have imageready coding, but who honestly cares? That coding is buggy and bulky beyond belief.
Then again editors - that also depends on who is using it and what they are using it for. If I'm writing a .html file, I don't want anything but a text editor with syntax highlighting, anything else is an annoyance and I turn it off.
I get what you mean, but you have to consider application of the programs when you compare them because there is no 'best' program, just best for a certain use. It happens that Photoshop is considered best in the majority of categories, but lets not fool ourselves by saying it's best at EVERYTHING, that is plainly untrue.
Sadly, the folks at OpenOffice.org think it's a good idea to resurrect clippy. They're going down the wrong path with that.
Hehe, windows rocks for windows users and linux for linux, bsd and os x for others. Who cares? Use what you love as it is "the best" and let other ppl use what they want. That said, i'm not happy with windows at all and the linux community, although huge and varied, is mostly unorganized which is very discouraging for new comers "Which distro should i use?" vs. BSD, OS X or ugg, windows. I use gentoo, windows XP for some games (i know about cedega) and freebsd mostly.
>> 1) Reboots are not SOP
well, not intirely. but yes, kernel upgrades will want you to. and graphics drivers. and various things will want you to change user mode (kde upgrades, graphics again). i've not noticed any real difference between the number of reboots for linux / win xp while i've been using both, but then i reboot between the two every few hours or so...
>> Autoconfiguration. After you buy that USB drive... plug it in then start using it.
I've said it before and i've said it again. that's just wrong. i don't own a single thing that hasn't taken hours to get working in linux. monitor? plug it in, refuses to work as either refresh rate is wrong or graphics drivers aren't installed properly. remote control / usb reciever? 20 hours figuring out lirc. tv card? one took a week to get working, the other still doesn't. sound needed configuring to unload various modules. joystick has never worked. getting a new hard drive partition to work involved learing to write fstab entries. at least my mp3 player (usb mass storage) was simple enough... did you just mean usb storage is easy to use? you may be right there. i've never used a printer but i get the feeling it'd be a few hours before it worked.
>>Under the "Start" menu you will find applications grouped in logical terms.
well, to start with, sure. soon as you try to install anything new you'll be lucky if it even bothers to add a new shortcut. and to move the icons around / rename them, at least in suse, you need to use a seperate program to do so. and it has a habit of creating double entries...
Nice blog!! I hope can learn here.
Very good food for thought. I realize that you're using hyperbole to drive home the effect, yet the truth is not that far from the joke.
Harsh? Possibly. Provocative, yes!
Well done!
There are two major types of acne blemishes; non-inflammatory acne and inflammatory acne. The non-inflammatory category is divided into two categories; closed comedo and open comedo. A closed comedo is otherwise known as a whitehead and appears on the skin surface as a small whitish or yellowish bump. The open comedo is also known as a blackhead. It is dark in appearance but, contrary to popular belief, is not a build-up of dirt. It is actually a build-up of melanin, a chemical that makes up the pigment of the skin surface. Blackheads and whiteheads can be prevented and controlled by using anti-inflammatory cleansers such as Proactive or products that contain aloe vera.
These comments have been invaluable to me as is this whole site. I thank you for your comment.
Just to share a few "new to Linux" experiences of my own (that are negative)...
(and yes I'm aware there are fixes and whatnot, but that doesn't mean it wasn't annoying)...
1. Can't play DVDs for more than 20 minutes. Can't get them to run at all in Xine or Totem. Using Ubuntu here and it took a while just to get it to play for 20 minutes, installing various software, having to look up forum posts for help...
2. Ubuntu won't boot on a good 250gig Western Digital it seems. Also installation was annoying because I had to use "Safe Graphics Mode" for reasons unknown and seemed slow running off of CD (I guess that's how all Live CDs are, though, but still annoying).
3. Comes with a lot of crap software, like I suppose most distros do. The notepad-like program it comes with for instance is surprisingly slow.
4. Fonts are naturally blurry. This is bad. Changing this in the options seems to be a pain. Free Microsoft fonts like Times don't look the same in Linux as they do on Windows (so I understand).
5. I can go on, but I'll stop. Suffice to say, I'm finding Linux to be cool and in many ways what it's cracked up to be, but in many ways not. Firefox freezes more often in Ubuntu than it was in XP, and various other nagging problems that just reminds me that Linux evangelists are just a bunch of dishonest jerks like Mac evangelists, etc.
:P
But i'll continue using it (and XP)...
I should clarify that I installed on another, older hard drive that has less space (still 120 gigs, though!!), and that I'm liking VLM more than Xine (because i can at least play 20 minutes of a movie) and uh Leafpad seems better than Text Editor. And Tomboy Notes just seems like a Bad Idea. Also seems silly that one of the headers in GNOME (?) at the top is "Places"... it contants CD/DVD Creator, Network, etc., so Places seems like the wrong word.
ehhh.. I'll stop now.
I mean VLC!
Also one more final thing: it's totally retarded that there's like 70 million flavors to choose from. How is the Linux community supposed to communicate and grow if even the terminal commands don't sync up from one distro to the next?
I don't expect much from Linux for this reason alone.
Hypocrites made fun of there being six or seven flavors of Vista....

"Linux is not user friendly. Get over it. Open office is no microsoft office, the gimp is definately no photoshop or paintshop pro, and eclipse, kate, emacs, and vi all suck bigtime compared to Visual Studio."
Yeah openoffice isnt microsoft office
its free it can be installed on as many machines as you want and supports alot of different formats and is compatable with microsoft office.
you compare gimp to photoshop which is also free can be installed on as many
computers as you want.
gimps better than paint shop pro jeez.
if your poor you probably have pirated version of
photoshop anyway if your using it ,windows turns the poor into criminals.
Pixel by the way is as good as photoshop in my opinion.
visual studio hahaha have you ever heard of codeblocks??? or gentoo for that matter . emerge -va yourapp --digest and the ebuild takes care of the dependencies. And if you programming
you get plenty of nice people willimg to help you develope your software.
which can be sold comercialy as long as you just link to the libraries and not rip the code for you software.Bet you didnt know that.
adobe acrobat reader phones home yeah, but its a bloody closed source binary.
100% of windows is a closed source binary. No opensource program can phone home and do something immoral like.
that checking for an update isnt the same as tracking youre habits. And if you dont like it updating you can look in the source and change it or ask someone in the community to patch it.
or even ask the developer to change that option.
Its also bs thats it not user friendly
my 70 year old father uses gentoo.
emerge -va gimp geez thats hard.
He can do that and he cant even navigate the internet properly.
and by the way to the person who thinks its hippocrytical that theres so many different versions of linux the keyword
here is different not the same operating system with reduced fuctionality depending on how much money you can offord to pay.
Linux is about freedom of speech and information ,about a community with a common goal ,Computers is a nessasary fact in todays society. Linux isnt religious it doesnt discriminate against the poor its a place where intelligance can shine through.
Why doesnt microsoft make an office for linux.
Education should be equal for all not just the rich.
linux sux.
BTW linux fan boi's smell funny too.

The result puts England firmly in control of Group Six after two wins in five days, but Capello 韓国ツアーwill be even more delighted by the manner of his team's triumph.
Croatia suffered their first competitive defeat at home and it was sweet revenge for England, beating リバイタラッシュthe team that ended their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008.
It was a far cry from England's limp displays under Steve McClaren and they were far superior in every department.
In the wonderful Walcott, they had a 人材派遣player who frightened the life out of the hosts whenever he got the ball.
The Arsenal winger gave the ball away with his first involvement, but from then on everything he touched seemed to ペアリングturn to goals as he wreaked havoc down the right flank.
With Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard dominating in midfield and Rooney linking play up between the midfield and Emile Heskey, England pinned Croatia back into their own half from the start.
After Heskey had a decent shout for a penalty 害虫駆除 waved away, Walcott put England in front with his first goal for his country.
There was a stroke of fortune about it as Danijel Pranjic's clearance cannoned straight into Robert Kovac and when the ball fell to Walcott inside the box on the right, he lashed it into チューリッヒthe bottom corner.

Eight minutes after the break Croatia suffered a hammer blow when Robert Kovac went up for a challenge with Joe Cole営業代行 and appeared to lead with his elbow, causing the Chelsea midfielder to bleed from a wound on his head.
Kovac was rightly sent off and Cole had to be stretchered off, but six minutes later England went 2-0 ahead when the sublime アスクルRooney - enjoying a glorious return to form wearing the three lions - beautifully teed up Walcott to smash in his second.
England were rampant, and Jermaine Jenas scampered away down the left and pulled the ball back for Rooney to open up his body 結婚相談所 東京and direct the ball into the corner.
It was like watching England at their Euro 96 best as they passed the ball around with devastating accuracy and Lampard was cruelly denied a goal after another gorgeous team move when his goal 花粉症
England were not done, though, and Rooney turned チューリッヒprovider once more to slip Walcott in on goal, the former Southampton star racing through and keeping his head to slot under Pletikosa to complete his treble.
It was the first competitive hat-trick for an England player since Michael Owen bagged three against Germany in the 5-1 win in Munich in 2001, and they can be every bit as pleased with マンガ 専門学校this result in the cauldron of the Maksimir Stadi
